Office Location: Fourways, Johannesburg
Working Hours: Market related
Discipline team: Pump Station and Pipeline System Engineering
Reporting to: Principal Civil Engineer – Slurry and water pumping systems
To supplement the skillset and offering of the pump station and pipeline systems engineering team at SLR Consulting in Fourways, Johannesburg. To provide assistance with the mechanical engineering design, costing, tender documentation, installation and commissioning of various pump station and pipeline systems across the world for mining and general infrastructure projects.
Project work may typically involve systems for bulk water supply, potable and waste water distribution, long distance pipelines, boreholes, open pit and mine underground dewatering, tailings slurry pipelines, return water systems, tailings paste and backfill distribution within mines, in-plant piping, acid mine drainage and other.
Plan and schedule project development, define the scope of work and prepare proposals to clients.
Conduct site visit investigations when required by the project.
Coordinate topographical survey work and slurry and pipeline testing work where required as input for the design.
Review and evaluate existing terrain and infrastructure information to identify preferred and alternative pipeline routes as well as to identify installation configuration options.
Develop mechanical design criteria, equipment and flow diagrams, operating and control philosophies.
Perform pipeline systems hydraulic design, 3D modelling and surge analysis.
Perform pipeline stress analysis calculations.
Perform pump selections and mechanical engineering design calculations to specify and size pumps, motors, control valves, regulators, relief valves, pipework and other associated mechanical equipment.
Design and detailing of mechanical pump stations, valve stations and tank assemblies. Good drafting capabilities and experience in using 3D AutoCAD software for detailing 3D mechanical assemblies is of key importance.
Preparation of mechanical tender documentation such as mechanical bill of quantities, specifications and equipment datasheets.
Preparation of engineering cost estimates and requesting price estimates from mechanical equipment suppliers.
Technical report writing.
Perform mechanical commissioning of pump station and pipeline systems.
Manage and coordinate small projects.
Pr.Tech or B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering). Registered professional or should have aspirations to register.
At least 4-6 years of experience in mechanical pumping and pipeline systems engineering design.
Previous knowledge (or willingness to develop knowledge) in the specialized field of slurry pipeline design for tailings projects.
