Since 1995 SLR have carried out a number of geological investigations for the quarry, including geophysical investigations, rotary core drilling, detailed geological interpretation and modelling, assessment of aggregate reserves and development of extraction schemes for future quarry extensions. The quarry is strategically important to the DoT as it is their only source of road making aggregates on the island.
In 2003 SLR completed a hydrological / hydrogeological assessment as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for a quarry extension. This assessment included recommendations for an integrated water management and monitoring system. SLR staff review the monitoring results on a quarterly basis and carry out an annual audit of the monitoring programme.
SLR also attended a public planning enquiry as expert witnesses on geological and hydrological / hydrogeological issues.
Since 2004 SLR have carried out annual geotechnical assessments for the quarry in compliance with health & safety best practice for the sector.
