Case Study

Closed Landfill Solar PV Feasibility (UK)

A local authority in South West England wanted to determine whether they could take advantage of the Government’s Feed in Tariffs by developing large scale solar PV installations on their portfolio of closed landfills. In addition to increasing their green credentials, this additional solar PV revenue stream, as well as that from landfill gas, could then be used to offset the liabilities associated with these closed landfills.

Location:

South West England, UK

Client:

A Local Authority

Sector:

Power

Project Objectives:

The objective of this project was to establish the feasibility of developing large scale solar PV facilities on a number of closed landfills, which included an assessment of financial, environmental and constructability issues. The ability to construct the site was particularly important given their location on a landfill cap.

Our Role

  • Carry out initial desk study assessments of all of the sites to assess environmental setting and the potential for grid connection
  • Site visits to ground truth the information and to establish developable area
  • Carry out an solar energy yield assessment based upon the potential area of development
  • Prepare a financial viability assessment based on potential revenues and costs
