To maximise the opportunity provided by the vast marine energy natural resource offshore Ireland, an assessment of the current and potential capabilities of Irish industry to supply products and services to the marine renewable energy sector in Ireland was carried out. The assessment produced a graphic generic supply chain diagram for marine renewable energy. Bottlenecks in the current international supply chain, niche areas with significant growth potential and gaps in the Irish supply chain were identified from desk research and interviews with stakeholders. A Directory of Irish Companies with potential to supply products and services to the marine renewable energy sector was complied showing their position in the supply chain and if they occupy a niche or bottleneck with significant growth potential.
SEAI commissioned the assessment to aid the process of stimulating the potential of Irish companies to supply products and services to the marine renewable energy sector by creating a directory, raising awareness among the companies of the opportunity and how to position themselves now to take advantage of the coming opportunities internationally and offshore Ireland.
SLR undertook the following works:
- Identify current and future product & service needs for marine energy projects
- Produce directory of Irish Marine Energy companies indicating where they are position in the supply chain and identifying opportunities for growth
- Develop and host workshops for the identified marine technology companies to increase awareness of the opportunities and initiate clusters around Irish ports that are associated with marine energy
