Regeneration: Renewable Energy Strategy (UK)

Brent Cross/Cricklewood is the largest urban regeneration project in Europe, with a total area of 167 hectares combining office, retail, residential and leisure uses. The masterplan includes nearly 10,000 new homes, three new schools, two health centres, a leisure centre and an expanded shopping centre.

Project Objectives:

Developers Hammerson are committed to the management of materials and waste in a truly sustainable manner. This forms part of an overall environmental sustainability strategy for all key stages of the development including; site demolition and clearance construction and operation.

Our Role

Development of proposals to maximise the recovery of waste and renewable energy generation focusing on the following;

  • An extensive recycling scheme
  • Conversion of residual waste to a high biomass fuel
  • Provision of an energy centre to convert this fuel into electricity and heat to be supplied into a dedicated district heating and cooling network
  • Underground pneumatic collection systems to transport waste from individual buildings to the fuel preparation facility, thus obviating the need for refuse collection vehicles
