Salt Mine Planning & Permitting (UK)

The mine located in County Antrim, produces over 500,000 tonnes of rock salt annually, which is principally exported from its jetty facility on Belfast Lough.

Project Objectives:

SLR provided multi-disciplinary technical advisory services to the Irish Salt Mining and Exploration Co. Ltd. (ISME), enabling the effective management and development of its underground salt mine at Kilroot.

Our Role

SLR prepared and submitted a planning application and environmental statement for a 270 ha. extension to the underground mine. The application represented one of the largest ever submitted in N. Ireland. Planning permission was granted in March 2010 with SLR and ISME being complemented by the quality of the application

In 2012 SLR obtained planning permission for a new 1.1 km long new mine access tunnel for the mine. This will facilitate improved access and ventilation.

SLR continues to provide mining, environmental and planning services to ISME in relation to the ongoing management and development of the mine.
