TotalEnergies - Proposed Offshore Exploration in Block 5/6/7, South-West Coast, South Africa

May 20, 2022

TEEPSA and its partners are applying for Environmental Authorisation to undertake exploration activities in Block 5/6/7 off the South-West Coast of South Africa.  TEEPSA proposes to drill one exploration well, and success dependent, up to four additional wells within an Area of Interest within the Block.  The Area of Interest is located offshore roughly between Cape Town and Cape Agulhas, approximately 60 km from the coast at its closest point and 170 km at its furthest, in water depths between 700 m and 3 200 m (locality map available for download below).  SLR has been appointed to undertake the required Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

Following the release of the draft Scoping Report for a 30-day comment period on 20 May 2022, SLR Consulting received several requests for an extension of the comment period on the draft Scoping Report. An extension to the comment period will have implications for the statutory time periods imposed by the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations 2014 (as amended). Thus, in response to these requests, SLR submitted a motivation to the Competent Authority in terms of Section 3(7) of the EIA Regulations 2014 (as amended) to extend the draft comment period on the draft Scoping Report, taking account the nature of the additional information requested, which is mostly not very voluminous or complex, but is regarded as necessary to facilitate meaningful public participation. This request to extend the comment period has been approved by the Competent Authority.

Therefore, the comment period on the draft Scoping Report has been extended by a period of two weeks from Monday, 20 July until Monday, 4 July 2022. Please submit all comments on the draft Scoping Report to SLR Consulting (contact details below) by no later than 4 July 2022 for inclusion in the final Scoping Report.
