SLR's strategic masterplanning team is in contention for two awards for their work on Paisley Town Centre’s Asset Strategy. Having been finalists in the RTPI and Planning Awards in 2014, the project is now vying for top accolades in the Placemaking Awards 2015.
This landmark project has been placed in two categories: a regional award for Scotland; and 'Best Use of Arts, Culture or Sports in Placemaking'. The regeneration of Paisley is already achieving international significance as an exemplar. Paisley has partnered with the OECD in Paris which is examining how culture can be used as a driver for economic development. This manifested itself recently in an OECD deputation, including advisers from Naples and Paris, who wished to learn how Paisley plans to leverage its fabric design heritage through a £100m capital development programme to support growth in the fashion sector. The British Council has also played a significant role in finding global partners to link with both opportunities for the traditional paisley fabric and 21st century textiles expertise, for example with smart fabrics for NASA.
Paul McTernan, technical director at SLR led this project and said, "Paisley is an excellent example of a forward-thinking, ambitious city that has allowed us to really challenge the norms of economic, social and environmental development. The blueprint we have created is a true partnership which celebrates the unique heritage whilst clearly looking to a sustainable future."
