SLR has won a top accolade for its Paisley Town Centre Heritage and Asset Strategy at the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning (SAQP) 2015. One of the Scottish Government’s most prestigious events, the SAQP Awards celebrates achievements in planning, from strategic visions to development on the ground.
SLR Consulting in partnership with Renfrewshire Council scooped the award in the ‘Development Plan’ category for the long-term regeneration strategy of Paisley town centre. It is the third major accolade the project has received this year, following two earlier successes at the UK Placemaking Awards.
SLR’s winning strategy was recognised by the judges for the boldness in its approach as well as the ‘clear leadership and vision it demonstrated from the outset’. The project, which used Paisley’s architectural and cultural heritage assets as a regeneration lever for investment to transform the town centre, will provide a £45 million a year boost to the local economy, create 800 jobs and pave the way for a UK City of Culture bid for 2021.
Paul McTernan, SLR Consulting Head of Regeneration and Masterplanning, said: “Since being appointed to prepare the strategy to revitalise Paisley’s town centre in 2013, the Council has been very proactive in implementing the strategy’s leading recommendations and has extended our contract to provide advisory services as the programme develops.
“We are delighted that the project has been recognised as a best practice exemplar in the planning and regeneration sector and with Paisley formally launching its bid to become UK City of Culture this month we wish them every success in delivering a world class destination project.”
