Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

PFAS are impacting communities, water resources and the environment on a global scale, posing financial, legal, and reputational challenges for many industries. Our experienced team of technical specialists are working with our clients to provide effective and pragmatic solutions to these complex and evolving challenges.

Overview

SLR’s technical specialists are committed to global knowledge sharing and remaining at the forefront of developments in the scientific understanding of PFAS, as well as the viable solutions to their environmental, social and operational impacts. We are supporting our clients in identifying the presence of PFAS and PFAS related products in their supply chains, and assisting them in their transition to fluorine-free alternatives.

SLR provides PFAS services to a wide range of clients including government and municipal, defence agencies, airports, airlines, fire authorities, property transaction clients, landfill operators, legal and insurance firms, mining companies, manufacturing and industrial clients, and the food and beverage industry.

Due to the complex nature of the PFAS problem, many of our technical services are available to work with our clients to produce bespoke solutions.

ESG & Sustainability Strategy: Companies with water stewardship requirements using PFAS in processes and/or products, or those that own land impaired by PFAS contamination face both environmental and social risks.

Natural Capital: Our goal is to enable businesses to implement robust, science-based actions to reduce their nature related business risks and improve outcomes for biodiversity on their sites, in their supply chain and beyond.

Waste & Circularity and Sustainable Waste Management: As PFAS chemicals face phase out and restrictions come into place, companies will need to identify viable options for safe disposal of PFAS containing products.

Social & Community Impact: Companies face reputational risks as the impact of PFAS on communities has grabbed media attention in recent years.

Responsible Sourcing: SLR supports clients in identifying and managing ESG risks in their company’s supply chain, and sourcing products and services in an ethical, sustainable, and socially conscious way, whilst leveraging opportunities to realise positive change.

Technical Advisory & Transaction Support and Transaction Due Diligence: We support clients in understanding risk and liability to inform their transactional decisions. PFAS can detrimentally impact ESG performance and impair asset values.

Environmental Management: As many installations and facilities may use or store PFAS chemicals, appropriate controls - such as containment measures and monitoring - are required to mitigate environmental risk.

Hydrogeology and Hydrology: protection of water as a resource is vital when considering the impacts of PFAS. Stormwater flooding of facilities that use and store PFAS can be modelled to enable design and implementation of mitigation measures.

Land Quality & Remediation: We identify PFAS contamination both on site and at receptors, and can develop and implement feasible and pragmatic remedial strategies to protect human health and the environment.

Water & Wastewater Engineering: PFAS contaminated water and wastewater requires the design and implementation of effective treatment systems and infrastructure decontamination solutions.

Risk Assessment & Toxicology: Our team identifies and utilises up-to-date scientific information to assess intrinsic hazards of PFAS, exposures to these chemicals, and their corresponding risk to the public, workers, and the environment.

Safety Advisory: SLR’s specialists have in-depth knowledge of multi-country legislation, supply chain interactions, stakeholder interests and business processes, and provide expertise to help deliver sustainable long-term improvements.
