Challenge
Energy costs at the Shire of Brusselton (Shire) of Busselton’s Geographe Leisure Centre (GLC), a major tourist facility, were rising rapidly. The Shire began a series of initiatives aimed primarily at energy conservation and greenhouse gas emission reduction via investigation of financially viable renewable energy options.
The project objectives included:
- Determining an optimum renewable energy option required for pool and space heating
- Project manage design, installation and certification of the preferred option.
Solution
Our team assisted on the following:
- Stage 1 feasibility study with cogeneration and geothermal likely optimum contenders.
- A detailed energy demand analysis of the GLC including possible future growth scenarios.
- Consultation with local power and water authorities.
- Developed detailed design of preferred (geothermal) option and tender specifications and assisted the Shire with bid selection, installation quality control and operational compliance.
Impact
Following energy demand calculations and payback analysis, in parallel with consultation with local power and water bodies, our team determined the geothermal option as being most-cost-effective.
The project had annual Greenhouse Gas savings of 450t CO2e, and annual energy savings of $70,000 Following commissioning and ongoing monitoring, the project was awarded a 2016 Australian Water industry (AWI) WA Award.
