Challenge

The Bishop’s Palace is a grade II listed building and the second oldest in Bangor, after the Cathedral. It is also the only substantially intact palace of its kind surviving from the late medieval period in Wales and has undergone many architectural changes over the course of its history.

Thanks to the help of Lottery funding, the palace, which was until recently the Town Hall, is to be the new home to Bangor’s museum and art gallery. One of the displays is to consist of an interactive virtual reality model, enabling visitors to investigate elements of the palace as it developed through time.

Solution

SLR’s heritage team was required to produce a series of affordable detailed graphics of all elevations of the building, including notes explaining the historical development of the Bishop’s Palace. This was to assist with the production of the final virtual reality models (produced by SLR’s visualisation team), ensuring that they would be historically accurate.

Impact

Detailed research was carried out and a series of six detailed 3D building models were created, showing the original 1500 building through to its development up to the Georgian period and finally its Victorian design and layout.
