Landscape design for Slessor ‘Pocket’ Gardens

Client Name
Dundee City Council (DCC)
Location
Dundee, Scotland

Challenge

Following SLR’s Place team’s involvement on V&A Dundee, the team was engaged directly by Dundee City Council (DCC) to produce designs for nine 10m x 10m gardens located in the main open space within the newly implemented waterfront masterplan.

Solution

As part of Slessor Gardens, a significant performance and events space, this series of ‘pocket gardens’ were themed to represent and celebrate aspects of Dundee’s history. Four of the gardens were based on a concept that highlights Dundee’s past trading routes, representing each destination through a themed garden. The remainder represent some of Dundee’s acknowledged scientific, medical, and cultural contributions. Each garden uses a distinct planting palette and layout in order to provide a series of diverse and distinctive sensory experience.

Impact

SLR’s Place team worked to tight timescales, collaborating closely with DCC to ensure the proposals were designed and delivered within a twelve-week programme. The gardens were opened by Queen Elizabeth II on the 6th July 2016.
