This course is designed to provide delegates with an awareness of the main environmental laws impacting chemical industry organisations and a framework for effectively managing compliance.

The course provides an overview to the structure of environmental law and introduces the main environmental laws discussing their purpose, key obligations, and practical approaches for best practice compliance management. The course also includes the role and function of the key regulators, the business consequences of non-compliance and a horizon scanning review of forthcoming changes to environmental law.

  • Introduction to the structure of environmental law:
    • Civil and criminal law; UK and devolved administrations; European Union and International agreements.
  • Introduction to the main environmental laws and compliance obligations:
    • Waste, Air, Energy, Carbon, Water, Nuisance, Contaminated land and conservation.
    • Practical approaches to managing compliance against each identified law.
  • Environmental regulators and sanctions:
    • Compliance enforcement; civil and criminal sanctions; business consequences of non-compliance.
  • Effective environmental law compliance management systems:
    • Legal registers; Compliance evaluations; Keeping up to date; Contractors; Managing incidents.
  • Horizon scanning:
    • Government environmental strategy and policy development; Open and closed consultations; New laws, amendments, repeals.
  • Question and answer session and close.
