Challenge

Crofthead Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a large agricultural AD plant that exports energy in the form of biomethane injected into the local grid. CO2 is separated from the methane in biogas when upgraded to biomethane and is typically vented to the atmosphere. A bolt-on CO2 capture plant was developed separately with agreements for electricity and CO2 purchase made with the main AD plant. The main AD plant has been successfully taken over and is injecting biomethane into the grid.

Solution

SLR supported the Crofthead biomethane project as Owners Engineer and subsequently Project Manager. SLR completed Technical Due Diligence of the carbon capture project for an initially-interested funder. We provided technical support to both sides around electrical integration, safety controls, and mechanical integration. This included amendments to the pressure relief system to prevent the release of methane to the CO2 plant. Our team also supported with coordination of site works to minimise downtime of the main AD plant.

Impact

The main AD plant has been successfully taken over and is injecting biomethane into the grid. The CO2 plant is not commissioned and provides dry ice for industrial uses and cooling.
