Local plan for the village of Cambusbarron

Challenge

The village of Cambusbarron sits within an attractive landscape setting; a combination of open landscape, hills and mature woodland give rise to a rich texture. Located to the immediate west of Stirling, it lies on the elevated southern edge of the carse landscape which is highly distinctive in the setting of Stirling. Cambusbarron also benefits from a backdrop of mature woodland on Gillies Hill, and the Touch Hills beyond that. SLR's Place team have been involved for some time, promoting the site through representation to the Local Plan, securing an allocation, preparing a planning permission in principle submission and securing consent.

Solution

Through a careful process of appraisal, analysis and concepts for design, SLR demonstrated that this was an effective site and the logical next area of growth for the village. A development framework layout was designed around working with the topography and the contextual edges to the site including mature woodland. Open space within the site is intended to link with the existing green network. The area in and around the SUDS scheme is to be planted so as to encourage wildlife, with a focus on creating an ecologically diverse area.

Impact

The main purpose of the open space is to encourage recreation, with good connections and links to the existing core path network and to Cambusbarron’s centre. Gillies Hill woodland acts as a good recreational resource for the residents so connections to this will be encouraged by providing ‘green links’ (footpaths) through the development blocks. The areas of open space are strategically placed to help alleviate the topography of the site as well as address the existing houses bordering the site.
