This project was recipient of the 2011 Merit Award from the Connecticut Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects.

SLR was contracted by the City of Bristol to develop a master plan for the restoration and revitalization of historic Rockwell Park, the flagship of the city’s park system. Although listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the park had fallen into disarray. With a construction cost of $7,500,000 the project included:

  • New gateway treatments including access drive, sidewalks, stone walls, columns and/or decorative fencing, and decorative lighting
  • Enhancements to the soldier monument with new sidewalks
  • Vehicular circulation and parking improvements
  • Enhanced pedestrian accessibility
  • New skate park
  • New gateway into Mrs. Rockwell’s playground
  • Playground relocation with new safety surface, security fencing, and signage
  • Renovations to Little League field - expansion and turf renovation, field lighting, and parking
  • New spray park and lighted volleyball court
  • New gateway treatments at the entrance into the lagoon area including informational kiosks, pavers, benches, and landscaping
  • Wetlands creation and new lagoon area
  • New pedestrian boardwalk with learning centers and signage
  • Park safety/security enhancements
  • Replacement of Dutton Avenue Bridge
  • The design of a large, circular amphitheater that could be used during the winter months as an ice skating rink
  • Environmental assessment and remediation of maintenance garage area
