Challenge
SLR has undertaken a number of projects for Whitsunday Regional Council focusing on urban regeneration, townscape upgrades and public realm outcomes within the region. As part of this, a signage and wayfinding strategy was produced for Bowen and Proserpine that helped to enhance the character and identity of each town as well as improve the legibility of each location.
Although there were separate towns with different character and identity, the focus was to create a suite of signage elements that provided uniformity within the Whitsunday Regional Council area.
The importance of unifying the designs to provide key similarities allows council to identify signage within the council area. Within the design however, allowance was made for individuality based around local character and the proposed signage packages proposed for each town.
Solution
SLR produced a series of finger blade signs for Bowen and Proserpine that reflected local entry sign theming and variation in colour that borrowed from the Whitsunday Regional Council’s vibrant logo. The Bowen signage focused on a folded steel element that was incorporated in to the design of all major entry signage elements.
The Proserpine signs focused on local art decoration heritage architecture that is prominent in Main Street. Whilst having individual design elements, both have the same form and scale to ensure uniformity within the local council area.
Bowen also incorporated ‘Mural Markers’ along Herbert Street to promote its local murals. In both locations it was important that the signage and wayfinding complimented other streetscape elements such as furniture, planting and pavement embellishments.
