Namwaste - Proposed Development of the Namwaste Management Facility (NMF) for the treatment and disposal of general and hazardous waste in the Erongo region
11 September 2024 | Client: Namwaste (Pty) Ltd
Namwaste (Pty) Ltd (Namwaste), as part of the Rent-A-Drum Group, is proposing to develop a new general and hazardous waste treatment and disposal facility in the Erongo region of Namibia to be known as the Namwaste Management Facility (NMF).
The development of the Namwaste Management Facility is subject to an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) being granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) in terms of the Environmental Management Act, 2007 (No. 7 of 2007) (EMA).
Granting of the ECC is subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) being undertaken. SLR Environmental Consulting (Namibia) (Pty) Ltd (SLR) has been appointed to undertake the necessary EIA process on behalf of Namwaste.
Status
The Scoping and EIA process presents several opportunities for Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) to review and comment on the environmental reports prepared for the proposed NMF. During the Scoping Phase, a Draft Scoping Report was made available to I&APs for comment (from 15 November 2023 to 15 December 2023). The Final Scoping Report, inclusive of I&AP comments, was accepted by the MEFT on 05 March 2024.
The process advanced to the Impact Assessment Phase and SLR has compiled a draft EIA Report, which was available for a 21-day review and comment period from 09 August to 02 September 2024. This provided an opportunity for I&APs to comment on any aspect of the proposed NMF and the impact assessment findings.
The Final EIA Report has been finalized and submitted to MEFT on 10th September 2024.
