Graduate Engineer (Building Physics / Acoustics / Sustainability), UK
Office Location: London
Salary: Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits inc BUPA, pension, travel insurance, life cover and more
Discipline team: Acoustics & Vibration
Are you an Engineering, Physics or Acoustics graduate seeking an opportunity to develop a career in a busy and highly sought-after area of Environmental and Engineering Consultancy? SLR is looking to appoint a Graduate Engineer (preferably with a Mechanical or Environmental Engineering specialty) to join its Acoustics and building physics team to be based in its London office. The successful candidate will provide support to projects in a number of specialist disciplines such noise monitoring and surveys, wind microclimate studies, sustainability assessments as well as associated modelling, reporting and provision of advice to clients.
SLR’s Acoustics team is diverse, providing a range of Acoustic, Noise and Vibration consultancy services across both Buildings and Environmental Acoustics. In addition, the fast-growing CFD, Wind & Energy team provide specialist building services with a focus on wind interactions with tall buildings and ecologically sustainable design assessments. The person joining will receive full training allowing them to develop specialist expertise and skills in the discipline - although knowledge of noise surveys and general building physics principles (e.g. heat transfer and thermal comfort) would be an advantage. General hands-on skills are also desirable.
Within the South East, SLR’s team works on a range of environmental noise projects and wind engineering assessments. Recent projects the team has undertaken include:
• Construction monitoring and reporting of noise, vibration and dust levels at a number of sites in London including 1 Triton Square for Lendlease.
• Acoustics and vibration surveying of construction activities around a residential development site in Strood for Medway Preservation and Development Ltd
• Wind microclimate assessment in support of a proposed high-rise development in West Ealing
SLR is a truly multinational consultancy and offers significant potential for career development and enhancement based on performance. Our “one team” culture, flat management structure and straightforward approach to project and budget management gives everyone the opportunity to progress; and to work on interesting projects with valued clients. We strive to ensure that opportunities both for new starters and for existing staff are open to all, and we have family friendly policies aimed at helping staff balance the needs of professional and family life. These include remote working facilities, as well as the potential for part time, job share and other flexible working arrangements.
Along with a competitive salary, our staff enjoy a comprehensive range of benefits including BUPA, business-class travel insurance, life cover, pension and much more.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will undertake noise and vibration surveys on a wide variety of projects across London and the SE of England. This will involve travelling throughout to a range of commercial/residential sites or industrial, infrastructure or other development sites to deploy, collect or operate noise monitoring equipment, as well as downloading the data from this equipment upon return to the office for use by the team of Acoustics Consultants.
Survey sites may be located anywhere within the UK; and the nature of the sites being surveyed and the range of data required for planning applications means that data may be required for any given period during the day or night. This means that the surveys undertaken will frequently involve regular travel and work outside of regular office hours.
The role will also involve transportation of site kit ranging from small noise meters to larger masts upon which sound meters may be attached.
In addition to this, the role will present opportunities to work within SLRs growing CFD, Wind & Energy team on various office-based assessments. This includes wind engineering, solar reflectivity, lighting and other building physics studies. Ability to analyse large datasets and strong report writing skills will be beneficial.
