Job Description

SLR’s busy European Geotechnical team has enjoyed continued commercial success working across a range of industry sectors. Consequently, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a graduate engineer to join our established geotechnical team in Nottingham.

Our geotechnical team provides specialist support for a wide range of SLR projects including mining, earthworks, renewable energy, infrastructure, water treatment facilities and many other civil engineering related projects. In delivering this support, SLR uses state of the art software packages to evaluate saturated and unsaturated flow regimes; perform deformation analyses, stability analyses, stresses and strains analyses; and perform soil structure interaction.This position will provide the successful candidate with a wide range of experience and is ideal for someone who is keen to develop their skills and knowledge in geotechnical engineering to become a professional, chartered engineer (Ceng or CGeol).

Whilst the role would suit a graduate seeking their first professional role, we would also be happy to hear from candidates who have already gained some degree of relevant post graduate experience in a commercial environment, in a similar geotechnical engineering role.

The successful candidate will be able to avail of on-the-job training from our team of industry leading professionals and will receive full support in working towards professional chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) (or Geological Society of London (GeolSoc) if appropriate).

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide office-based support to staff in the Nottingham office working on a diverse range of projects. The type of work will help develop the successful candidate towards ICE chartered status and is envisaged to include the following:
• Proposal writing
• Site investigation fieldwork – planning, procurement, supervision
• Installation of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring of readings
• Geotechnical analysis / numerical modelling
• Factual reporting
• Interpretive reporting
• Production of detailed engineering designs and specifications
• Production of tender documents and bills of quantities
• Construction supervision

This role may also support other engineering disciplines within the Nottingham and other SLR offices, such as land surveying and civil engineering.
Whilst some projects will be based in the local area, the role may also involve supervision of projects in other locations throughout the UK and overseas for periods of up to 3 months at a time.

PERSON SPEC – SUMMARY

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
• Minimum degree (BEng/BSc/Meng) in Geotechnical / Civil / Mining Engineering or related discipline, or relevant MSc
• Student level ICE membership or above (or equivalent professional body)
• Good understanding of the principles of Geotechnical Engineering
• Relevant work experience is not essential, but any demonstrable experience in civil / mining / geotechnical as part of a sandwich year or post-graduation would be an advantage
• Full driving license
