Port: Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment (AUS)

Abbot Point Port is currently the subject of a number of terminal development proposals with the main focus being the handling and export of coal. To provide the necessary environmental information on the potential cumulative impacts of these proposals, the four current proponents are undertaking a cumulative environmental impact assessment referred to as the Abbot Point Cumulative Impact Assessment.

Project Objectives:

SLR Consulting was engaged by the Abbot Point Cumulative Impact Assessment Working Group to develop a 3D noise model for existing and proposed terminal operations at Abbot Point, as part of the Cumulative Impact Assessment.

The objective of this Study was to identify whether the cumulative impacts from land-based operational noise might affect the habitat value of the Caley Valley Wetland and adjoining coastal areas.

SLR Consulting undertook the following works:

Terrestrial Fauna Noise Criteria

Drawing on existing ecological studies for Abbot Point, specialist experience and international precedents, SLR Consulting developed noise impact criteria for ecologically sensitive receptors.

Development of 3D Noise Model

The 3D noise model developed for the Cumulative Impact Assessment incorporated all acoustically significant plant from the existing T1 terminal and proposed T0, T2, T3, T4-9 and Multi Cargo Facility terminals.

Assessment of Impacts to Fauna

From the noise contours plots developed in the 3D noise model, areas of the Caley Valley Wetland predicted to exceed the terrestrial fauna criteria were identified. Noise management measures were identified in accordance with the objectives of the Study.

Air Quality Assessment Peer Review

SLR Consulting was tasked with peer reviewing the Air Quality Assessment prepared for the Cumulative Impact Assessment.
