Challenge

CIVITAS DESTINATIONS was a flagship EU demonstration project deploying innovative solutions for clean urban mobility in European tourist destinations: Elba (Italy); Madeira (Portugal); Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain); Limassol (Cyprus); Rethymno (Greece); and Valletta (Malta). These were integrated into the cities’ sustainable urban mobility plans to help reduce tourism-derived pressure on transport systems and unite diverse stakeholders in shifting towards sustainable modes.

Solution

As the Technical Project Manager, SLR successfully worked with municipalities, transport authorities, tourist agencies and ministries in six European towns to coordinate the delivery of nearly 60 sustainable mobility schemes, including: eBike share, eBus fleets, road space reallocation, access for the visually and physically impaired and mode shift incentivisation schemes. SLR also co-authored a report concerning the impact of COVID-19 on travel behaviour in 2020-21 and implications for policy, investment and resilience.

Impact

SLR delivered several technical reports which analysed the results from the mobility management pilots, setting out recommendations for the transport and tourist sectors to deploy low carbon mobility services. The team also designed the stakeholder mapping framework for each city and helped build capacity by delivering presentations and cross-sector training workshops for key decision makers.
