Challenge

SLR were commissioned by the City of Moreton Bay to undertake the concept design and detailed design work for the Caboolture River Environmental Educational Centre (CREEC) Adventure Playground.

Solution

Adjoining the existing CREEC all abilities playground, the Adventure Playground aims to promote the fauna and flora of the CREEC site through exploration, discovery, and play. Incorporating feature play mounds, trampolines, balancing logs, slides and play sculptures, the playground complements the existing character and ecology of the site whilst providing an immersive experience for children to learn and grow in nature.

Emersed within the existing vegetation on site the CREEC adventure playground utilises mounding and meandering pathways to create points of interest, to engage the user and create diverse experiences at each visit to the play space. SLR’s goal was to bring nature ‘closer’ to the central focus through the incorporation of a diverse planting palette within the design.

Featuring bespoke artworks and sculptures the Adventure Playground links back to the education centre, reinforcing knowledge through physical learned experience. Making the CREEC Adventure Playground is a great example what can be achieved when design is integrated with the natural environment, education and play.

Impact

CREEC Adventure Playground embraces the senses through the combination of elevated landscapes and enclosed spaces, that complement the grand nature of the adjoining All Abilities Playground. Providing an integrated extension to the existing playground that focuses on tactility, sensory engagement, challenging play and intergeneration interactions.

Incorporating key endemic fauna species within the fabric of the design, allows this space to transform into an educational journey that aligns with the existing onsite Environmental Center and encourages learning through play. Amplifying CREEC Adventure Playground’s sense of place and unique character.
