Challenge
SLR was instructed by AngloGold Ashanti Limited (AGA) to carry out a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) of a proposed non-hazardous landfill development at their Obuasi Gold Mine, Ghana.
The AGA Obuasi mine waste management plan intends to use the temporary landfill site located at the eastern section of the existing Sansu South Tailings Storage Facility as a new engineered landfill facility. This will be for the disposal of non-hazardous waste generated from the mine for five years, with a further five years contingency.
The facility, which will be for the sole use by the mine, will result in a discontinuation of the use of the nearby Obuasi Municipal Waste Dump. The project will consist of construction, operation and restoration (closure / decommissioning) phases that will incorporate the following elements:
- Engineered non-hazardous waste landfill;
- Internal access roads;
- Weighbridge, offices and site reception facilities;
- Wheel wash;
- Wash down bay;
- Hazardous waste storage;
- Bio remediation and composting slabs;
- Lighting; and
- Landfill site support area within which an environmental management compound would be situated.
