Challenge

This major development in South San Francisco will be constructed in five phases, featuring 12 low-rise commercial buildings along with significant outdoor amenity spaces. SLR was retained to provide expert guidance and analysis on pedestrian wind comfort, in addition to other services, throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Solution

SLR initially provided qualitative pedestrian wind comfort guidance for the overall masterplan in 2018. As the design progressed, SLR utilized computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze various building orientations for Phases 2 and 3, followed by a pedestrian wind tunnel study in 2019. Additional wind tunnel testing in 2020 focused on Phase 2 for pedestrian wind comfort and exhaust re-entrainment. In 2022 we provided guidance regarding aeroacoustics and rain infiltration for the recently completed Phase 1 building.

Highlights

Highlights included the utilization of CFD to visualize the difference in wind conditions for numerous building orientations. Subsequent quantitative wind tunnel studies confirmed pedestrian wind comfort conditions across four seasons and various times of day, with multiple tests conducted to refine the
design. Given the building intent for pharmaceutical companies, additional
wind tunnel testing addressed exhaust re-entrainment concerns, informing mechanical design modifications as needed. Later, the owner requested guidance on an ongoing aeroacoustics issue, as well as a rainwater infiltration event that occurred during a significant storm.
