Challenge

SLR was commissioned by Brisbane Housing Company to produce a series of conceptual landscape design ideas for the Dorothy and Moyia O’Brien Place in Warry Street, Fortitude Valley.

The Dorothy and Moyia O’Brien Place, is a Public Housing Development which was first opened in 2005. It’s vision was to help hundreds of Queenslanders access safe, long term and affordable housing.

During the consultation process, Brisbane Housing Company saw the desire of residents to reclaim existing space within the complex in order to challenge some of the negative associations with the building.

Solution

Our design aimed to facilitate and promote interaction of the residents by enhancing communal spaces and improve the appearance of key landscape elements. Colour, texture, vitality and interest were the key design elements targeted within the spaces.

The underlying concept was to beautify the existing building and landscape areas through a series of design upgrades. The proposed upgrades include the arrival, thoroughfare and community gathering areas within the complex.

Solution

The end result created a series of enhanced spaces for the community that they would be proud of, whilst creating a level of safety and security that strengthened the community.
