In early February, a small team of SLR experts from across the world convened virtually to assist the City of Bellevue, Washington, and NBBJ, an international award-winning architecture and design firm, in preparing new land use code for a sustainable district that anticipates/incorporates mobility of the future. SLR's global team, composed of experts in the US and the UK (Principal Transportation Planner and Active Transportation Lead Holly Parker, UK Director of Transportation and Mobility Planning and Vehicle Electrification Expert James McKechnie, International Director of Transportation and Mobility Planning and Director of Social Research Laurie Pickup, and US Head of Sustainability Solutions Ian Todreas) participated in a half-day charrette to provide best practices, out-of-the-box thinking, and future-proof concepts to build an equitable, nature-positive, zero-carbon, and climate resilient transportation and mobility infrastructure for a new neighborhood. The envisioned district would replace the current landscape, which is divided by a network of arterials and big box retail with vast parking lots. Some of the ideas they contributed: road diets for major thoroughfares, drone-delivery-friendly airspace, biodiversity corridors in lieu of medians, protected and appointed walksheds for all--from toddlers to elderly, and more.
