SLR are thrilled to hear that our client, RWE, has today received consent for the Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm off the north coast of Wales. The project is anticipated to generate much needed clean energy equivalent to the needs of more than 500,000 homes.
As onshore consenting lead to the project, SLR were instrumental in achieving consent, assisting RWE through the EIA and DCO processes. Our project partner GoBe coordinated the offshore elements and were responsible for the overall EIA.
As well as providing a robust Environmental Statement and DCO application documents, SLR also supported RWE through the examination process providing technical expertise in onshore matters including general EIA, ecology, hydrology, noise and traffic. SLR supported RWE during examination hearings and responded to questions from the Examining Authority and interested parties.
A key challenge of the project was undertaking effective survey mobilisation and consultation during COVID19 restrictions. Despite the unexpected challenge, our team seamlessly adapted and engage virtually with key consultees, ensuring we still achieved the “buy in” needed for the project without disruption to project programme. Through rigorous health and safety procedures, field surveys were able to commence in summer 2020 when lockdown restrictions were still in place.
Jo Pickard, RWE Senior Consents Manager on Awel y Môr, said: ‘My colleagues and I cannot overstate the competent and professional job that was done and how impressed we have been with the service provided by GoBe and SLR.”
SLR are currently working on a number of offshore windfarm connections in UK and Irish waters as well as supporting proposed new developments in South Africa, and Australia, providing our clients with trusted advice and a proven offshore wind consenting team.
