Dr. Jill Woodworth

Biography

Jill is a Technical Director based in our Darwin office with over 25 years’ experience in the science of ecotoxicology and over 30 years’ experience in assessing environmental impacts of water quality in freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Her background in microbiology, aquaculture, chemistry and laboratory management provides the skills required to assess the quality of data and then use this data to determine the biological impacts of chemicals in the environment.

Jill uses her 25 years’ of experience in team management and project management to provide clients with a project that will meet the client’s requirements while being delivered on time and on budget. Jill has provided investigative reports and management plans to clients that need to meet regulatory approvals and many of these reports are available for public viewing on the Regulator’s or client’s websites. Jill provides technical advice to clients to meet both State and National regulatory requirements and has worked with both clients and regulators to obtain site specific guidelines. This type of client/regulator liaison has included such projects as: Deriving site specific trigger values and management of treated mine water discharged into a World Heritage Area: and Developing a Discharge Management Plan for treated mine water to enable dewatering of the mine site and backfilling of the disused pits for future remediation.

Jill has recently been working in the area of conducting ecological risk assessments (ERA) of poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for Defence and the oil and gas industry. The ERAs conducted take into account all exposure pathways via soil, surface water and groundwater for terrestrial, freshwater and marine flora and fauna. Food web models were created to determine movement of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) (in particular) through the food chain to higher order consumers and assess the risk of adverse impacts to the higher order consumers. The ERAs also assess species of high conservation value, either threatened or endangered which have been identified by the client or stakeholders.

Jill has conducted seminars on potential environmental impacts of PFAS for clients and industry bodies and has presented papers on management of treated mine water discharge at National and International conferences.
