Architectural design and delivery of 'bothies' across rural Scotland

Challenge
Members of SLR’s architectural team have been instrumental in the instigation, design and delivery of individual, site-specific ‘bothies’ within rural locations across Scotland since 2011.
Solution
The interventions were conceived through ‘The Bothy Project’ who identify sites, secure funding and then build beautiful bothies in sensitive and remote areas of the country, to serve principally as studios/residences for visiting artists but also to provide self-catering bunkhouse-style accommodation.
Impact
Three have been realised to-date: one at Inshriach near Aviemore, one on Eigg, and one (in temporary form) at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, eventually to be rebuilt at Assynt. The bothies have all involved liaisons with relevant authorities for planning, with Eigg and Assynt bothies involving Site of Special Scientific Interest and community consultations. The bothies also act as revenue / income streams for owners and the wider communities.
A further recent prototype bothy for general sale has been designed and built and is currently on show at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
