Challenge
The Caltech Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies (CAST) is a 10,000 sq. ft. facility where researchers are discovering new applications for technology machinery and robotics.
The already existing outdoor courtyard area north of the Von Karman building has been covered with a new roof to create a three-sided, outdoor, testing arena for the Center of Autonomous Systems and Technologies.
Solution
CFD and acoustic consulting services were undertaken to assist with air flow modeling and acoustic performance aspects of the new testing arena.
A fan wall consisting of up to 2000 fans was built to test air drones that would be flying outside where acoustics, vibration, and wind conditions will often change, similar to natural environments.
Impact
SLR provided a highly consultative framework for interaction with the design team, supported by computational and numerical modeling. This allowed for us to provide guidance in a timely and cost-effective manner.
SLR consultation through design included:
- CFD Modeling
- Acoustic Modeling
- Interior room acoustics
- Sound isolation
The CFD modeling and acoustic testing were requested to assist with air flow modeling and acoustic performance aspects of the new testing arena.
The completed project is now a world-renowned research facility in the robotics and automation field. This state-of-the-art test center will be the forefront of innovation of drones and aeronautic engineering.
