Central Regional Water Network (CRWN) optimisation study

Client Name
BHP Billiton
Location
Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia

Challenge

The CRWN is a network of pipelines that connects four of BHPs largest operating coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The pipeline enables mine affected water to be pumped between the sites to reduce the impact of water on operations and achieve legislative compliance.

Solution

SLR’s project involved stochastic water balance modelling of the impact of climate risk on the site’s individual and collective water inventories and the identification of actions to optimise the pipeline and thereby reduce risks both to operations and the environment.

SLR was selected to undertake this work due to our extensive experience in mine water management (particularly in the GoldSim software) at complex sites and stochastic risk assessment.

Impact

Our pragmatic approach has assisted in identifying bottlenecks in the system and provided significant benefits to the client.
