Environmental Audit for the Brisbane Freight Terminal
- Client Name
- Pacific National
- Location
- Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Challenge
Pacific National sought to create a greater understanding the existing wastewater (generating liquid trade waste) and stormwater systems that are on site, to ensure current operations are meeting regulatory approvals and guidelines.
The audit included assessing the adequacy of existing trade waste and stormwater management systems and providing recommendations for remedial action and system upgrades to support legislative compliance. The audit also supported meeting corporate obligations to be a leader in managing contaminants that pose risks to the environment.
Solution
SLR engaged with Pacific National to undertake the audit and advisory work based on the past work completed with Pacific National and SLRs project experience having competed these for similar organisations.
SLR undertook civil and environmental planning reviews of the BFT, facilitated site visits and ran workshops to consult with internal stakeholders to ensure recommendations presented to the client were appropriate.
SLR presented the audit findings in a risk assessment workshop with stakeholders, reported on the environmental audit findings and provided strategic guidance to allow Pacific National to move to the next phase (concept design phase) of the project, implementing improvement works such as upgrades to site infrastructure, trade waste treatment systems and improvements to site operations.
As part of the phase 2 works package, SLR completed high level overland flow modelling of stormwater run-off and subsequent Site Based Stormwater Management Plan (SBSMP), and supporting concept design works.
Impact
SLR was able to provide the client with a full environmental risk-based audit of the BFT with proposed infrastructure, operational changes, and constructability considerations within a complex brownfield operation site. A staged and prioritised breakdown of grouped work packages and a delivery model were presented as part of the site improvement strategy.
