Southbury Main Street pedestrian safety study

Client Name
Town of Southbury
Location
Connecticut, USA

Challenge

SLR was hired by the Town of Southbury to identify and conceptually-design pedestrian safety improvements for a nearly 2-mile stretch of Main Street South in the downtown.

This corridor contains several signalised intersections, many unsignalised intersections/driveways, several crosswalks (some unsignalised and others with varying degrees of pedestrian signalisation), much of the town’s commercial base, as well as the Southbury Green, municipal buildings and town schools.

The Town of Southbury was clear in continually seeking ways to improve the safety and liability of residents, employees, and visitors.

Solution

The Pedestrian Safety Study also developed several aesthetic improvements to further complement and enhance the unique character, landscaping, and streetscape of Southbury’s Main Street South. This Pedestrian Safety Study, which included public engagement and a public walk audit, developed numerous renderings to visualise the improvement plans, as well as preliminary cost-estimates, and safety-benefits data supporting the prioritisation across the many recommended safety improvements.

Impact

SLR recently completed this study and gave a final study presentation to the Town in the fall of 2020. Next steps for the town will be to secure funding for the development of construction drawings and the actual implementation of the pedestrian-focused roadway safety improvements.
