Tremorfa Anaerobic Digestion Facility

Client Name
Kelda Organic Energy
Location
Cardiff, Wales

Challenge

Kelda Organic Energy have built a state of the art anaerobic digestion (AD) facility to treat 35,000tonnes of food waste as part of the Welsh Government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ initiative.

Solution

The process produces a compost like material which is recycled back to agricultural land as a soil conditioner and fertiliser which is high in valuable nutrients (particularly nitrogen), leaving no waste. The electricity produced from burning the gas generated is supplied to the adjacent Dŵr Cymru wastewater treatment works.

Impact

SLR carried out an initial design review of the project at the planning phase and identified particular issues that needed to be carried forward into the detailed design. A Pre-Construction Information Pack was also produced at this time.

Further design reviews were carried out during the design period and particularly at the monthly meetings. The project was a design and build which allowed early contractor involvement and liaison over construction methodologies.

This assisted the client to eliminate foreseeable health and safety risks to the project.

SLR also carried out independent safety inspections of the site work.
