Case Study

Waste Gas to Electricity CDM Project (SA)

SA Calcium Carbide (SACC) (Pty) Ltd, located in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has with SLR as their appointed project managers, developed an 8MW capacity electricity generation capacity Co-gen project utilising their furnace waste off-gas. The power produced displaces existing Eskom fossil fuel derived electricity and exhaust heat is further utilised in the aggregates drying kiln replacing LPG gas. SLR also project managed the successful registration of the project as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) initiative – registered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The project is termed as a “Green Energy” project owed to the realization of significant reductions in harmful greenhouse gas emissions; registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; reducing the use of fossil-fuel fired electricity; using previous waste gas as a fuel source; and providing cogeneration with the use of exhaust heat for SACC’s processes.

Project Objectives:

The key objectives of the project were:

  1. Energy Security to SACC;
  2. Use of waste fuel-gas and Cogeneration – using exhaust heat;
  3. Realisation of Carbon Emission / Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions by developing a CDM project;

Strategically, the project provides valuable energy security to SACC in reducing the load requirement from the municipal (and Eskom) electrical grid. Such security enables SACC to continue with planned production and company growth to the name-plate production levels the furnace can achieve (up to the 90,000 to 100,000 tons of Calcium Carbide per annum production target).
