SLR to Present at IAIA17 in Montreal
Associate Ecologist with SLR, Nicola Faulks, will be presenting a paper based around habitat mapping, methodology and mitigation at IAIA17 in Montreal from the 4-7th of April. The theme of the conference is ‘Impact Assessment’s Contribution to the Global Efforts in Addressing Climate Change’, and Nicola will be joined by a wealth of other speakers discussing topics from climate finance and risk management, to climate change, extreme events and impact assessment.
The topic Nicola will be addressing is, ‘Going Beyond National Standards to Meet IFI Requirements’, with her paper considering the sufficiency of reporting in species identification, and the ability of these reports to fulfil International Financial Institution’s (IFI) requirements. In the paper, Nicola discusses her experience of how to undertake habitat mapping in countries with no defined protocol, and discusses how working with in-country experts is key to implementing a mapping strategy so that broad scale habitat types can be quantified. The ability to map habitat types allows for a more quantified/evidence based ecological impact assessment being undertaken, in line with IFI requirements, as well as informing the mitigation strategy.
IAIA17, hosted by the International Association for Impact Assessment, is the only international, interdisciplinary conference dedicated to the art and science of impact assessment, and will be attended by over 1,000 delegates from 80+ nations. For more information on the conference, including how to attend, please see the IAIA17 website.
