Cross Border Collaboration for Giant Mine Continues for 7th Year

SLR’s Air Quality Team in Canada and U.S., has installed and continues to operate community-based air monitoring stations at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories Canada. This real-time data is published to a public website as part of the public outreach program associated with the remediation efforts at the mine site.

SLR Completes Focused Feasibility Study for Former Lumber Mill Site

Through SLR’s long-standing attorney relationship, our team was retained in April 2016 to conduct a feasibility study for the Avison Lumber Company, located in Molalla, Oregon. The former mill company produced lumber from the 1950s to 1990’s and was sanctioned by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to perform extensive cleanup before redevelopment.

Working in partnership; protecting Devon’s wildlife

During his discussion with Richard, Ben noticed a few bird, bat and hedgehog boxes in the workshop, being constructed for local gardeners. Ben was really impressed at the quality of the boxes and wondered whether there was an opportunity for the Wood Works team to build dormouse boxes. The SLR team needed a lot of these in in 2019, to provide mitigation and enhancement for many of their major infrastructure and residential projects.

California Water Boards Release PFAS Assessment Data for Drinking Water Supplies

On October 14, 2019 the California State Water Resources Control Board released results from their first phase of their state-wide investigation into the presence of PFAS in groundwater. This initial phase of testing included almost 600 drinking water supply wells, primarily those in the vicinity of airports and municipal solid waste landfills, and in wells where these contaminants had been observed previously.

PFAS Update: EPA issues new action plan

In March, a bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation that would classify all PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) as “hazardous substances” under the Comprehensive Emergency Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), often referred to as Superfund. If this bill passes and is signed into law, cleanups of these chemicals would be eligible for CERCLA cleanup funds and cost recovery actions under that law. The bill was introduced following the EPA’s issuance of their PFAS Action Plan, which was met with a mixed response, including skepticism from states who have indicated that some of the steps highlighted in the action plan should be taken more quickly – such as the change outlined in this recent legislation.

SLR Selected to Help Develop Open Access Oil and Gas Operations Emission Calculator for Research Group

University of Texas (UT), Austin is partnering with Colorado State University (CSU), and SLR to develop libraries of emissions data sets and activity factors for The Collaboratory to Advance Methane Science (CAMS), an industry-led collaborative research consortium. This will be their first research project to study spatial and temporal methane emissions profiles across various oil and gas basin locations.

Managing Recyclables Price Risk – Is the Sector Missing a Partner?

Does reluctance in the waste sector to manage recyclables price risk presents opportunities for the insurance sector? Over 6 million tonnes of recyclables (e.g. paper, card, metals, plastics, glass) are collected annually from 23 million households in England and the volumes are expected to increase further in the future. The responsibility for providing household recyclables collection service in England sits with c.320 local authorities, of which over 170 have contracts with private waste management companies for the provision of collection services.

Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee unanimously resolved to grant planning permission for restoration and conversion of Birmingham’s Methodist Central Hall, a Grade II* Listed Building, into a high quality mixed-use hotel and apart-hotel facility on 1 March 2018. Despite the buildings complexities and sheer scale the decision was received within 13 weeks that included comprehensive discussions with Historic England and other consultee partners who all have an interest in the iconic building’s future use and protection.

PLIA and Ecology Optimistic about First Month of New Technical Assistance Program

In a recent presentation to the Northwest Environmental Business Council, the Director of the Pollution Liability Insurance Agency (PLIA), Russ Olsen, was pleased with the progress of the new Petroleum Technical Assistance Program (PTAP), citing the successful entry of 48 sites into the new program, which provides technical assistance and opinion letters on low and medium risk sites where petroleum is the only contamination.

Enko Capital is an asset management company focussed on African investment, and their $7 million transaction gives the $64 million Enko Africa Private Equity Fund a significant minority stake in AMI, as well as a seat on AMI’s board.
