Belfast student experiences unique week as an environmental consultant

SLR Consulting recently took on Belfast Royal Academy sixth former, Rebekah Boyd, for a student placement as part of the school’s work experience programme.

The firm wanted to highlight the wide range of career options that are available in the environmental sector and Rebekah was involved in a range of consultancy work during the week she spent with SLR.

Careful planning and obliging clients also enabled Rebekah to accompany staff on site visits to observe active and restored landfill operations, Material Recycling Facilities (MRF’s) and quarry operations.

Rebekah, who is studying Geography, Sociology, History and Politics at A-level, said: “It was great to see first-hand the careers options available in the environmental sector and I understand much more about how it covers a wide range of disciplines, from helping businesses become more sustainable to supporting industries such as mining and minerals or waste management.”

SLR Technical Director and Civil Engineer, Jane Chambers, who is based in the company’s Belfast office on Potter’s Quay, said: “We feel it is really important to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) related careers in this sector to girls, as it may be seen as a male dominated industry.

“We are delighted that Rebekah found the week interesting and informative and wish her luck in her chosen career path.”
