We are pleased to share SLR is partnering with rePLANET, a ‘for purpose’ company, driving large scale ecological restoration and protection through private sector funding.

rePLANET was created to demonstrate that private sector investment can be attracted at scale to restore or protect ecosystems via the sale of carbon credits with quantified biodiversity benefits and biodiversity credits. They are a world-leading carbon and biodiversity project developers with many successful projects globally and excellent scientific and market credibility. They were heavily involved in the development of the Wallacea Trust biodiversity credit methodology which ranked as the top biodiversity crediting initiative in a recent global analysis. Gathering robust baseline data is key to demonstrating the success of biodiversity credit funded projects, as reassessment of the same biodiversity metrics over the lifetime of the project is used to measure and verify Nature Positive outcomes associated with the interventions.

The Wallacea Trust biodiversity credit methodology uses a basket of a minimum of five metrics which differ to reflect the ecosystem in question, a similar approach to the consumer price index. It defines a unit of biodiversity as ‘1% uplift in biodiversity per hectare as measured by the median % change in a basket of metrics reflecting conservation objectives for a given project’. Consequently, rePLANET has established a significant, leading presence in the nascent biodiversity quantification / credit market. This has been established from advising multiple organisations on how to quantify and monetise their biodiversity; being part of nearly all international schemes for developing biodiversity credits (including WEF, Verra, BCA, and IAPBC); and from participation or founding other relevant organisations (including Wallacea Trust, Biodiversity Futures Initiative, and Lincoln University Biodiversity and Carbon Credits Annual Conference).

Synergistically, SLR as a sustainability expert, with over 3,500 staff worldwide, has the reach and depth of skills to advise companies on their carbon, nature and biodiversity strategies, as well as many other related aspects including approaches to nature-related: governance, impacts and dependencies, and risks and opportunities. SLR’s 45+ technical disciplines including ecology, biodiversity, water, landscape, heritage, and GIS allow SLR to offer a one stop option for clients interested in biodiversity, natural capital, and sustainability more broadly.

SLR and rePlanet have been building a strong working relationship over a number of years including collaborating on a flagship voluntary bio-credit project in the Scottish Highlands.

This partnership expands on SLR’s existing nature-based solution skills, allowing clients access to rePLANET’s nature positive target expertise. Examples of where this partnership will benefit our clients include:

  • Companies looking to quantify the biodiversity benefits of their offset or insetting projects using a robust methodology that will be comparable among projects using the same methodology globally;
  • Companies seeking to design an insetting ecosystem restoration project to maximise their carbon and biodiversity gains;
  • Companies planning to invest in a Beyond Value Chain project – either by directly investing or by offtake agreements.

The partnership between SLR and rePLANET will allow these companies access to an integrated and cohesive team capable of supporting their entire journey.
