Challenges
SLR provided environmental assessment services to support decommissioning of a metering station where mercury manometers were historically used. Initial investigation consisted of mercury-specific sampling methods and careful observation of soil conditions. The presence of free-phase mercury, in the form of millimetre-sized beads, was observed in soil near the meter run building and along the unpaved edges of the concrete walkway, likely transported on workers’ footwear. Mercury-impacted soil was observed at surface and did not extend past 0.5 metres below grade.
Solution
Soil remediation was conducted to address mercury-impacted soil. The remedial approach included removal of impacted soil by excavation.
Impact
SLR employed a cost-conservative and efficient remedial approach by using existing delineation samples to develop excavation extents, thereby reducing additional confirmatory sample analysis and advancing the project into the next phase with little to no downtime at the site.
