Challenge
SLR's Place team led on the Development Framework for Chapel Wharf, Salford. A place caught between clusters of new development, Chapel Wharf today is a series of disjointed developments and characterful heritage buildings, separated and eroded by road infrastructure and sporadic development.
Solution
The framework looks to repair the identity of the place, by applying 15-minute neighbourhood principles to create a pedestrian focused, well connected and enhanced residential and mixed use community.
The framework establishes a series of important catalyst projects, each focused on key areas across the neighbourhood that will help transform the vitality of the place. The most significant of these is the revitalisation of the historic viaduct arches, which will create a sequence of new uses and functions under, through and along the viaduct.
Important projects alongside the framework include new crossings along Trinity Way, public realm enhancements to Sacred Trinity Church and a new urban garden along the Irwell.
Impact
The Development Framework was adopted by Salford City Council on 23 May 2022 and defines the vision and strategy for Chapel Wharf through to 2042.
