Margate Village project landscape design

Challenge

SLR was commissioned by Moreton Bay Regional Council to produce high level landscape and urban design ideas for Margate Village on the Redcliffe Peninsula, north of Brisbane.

Margate is a small coastal township that has had a post-war history as a seaside holiday destination, but has, over the past few decades declined as a commercial village precinct. SLR took the approach of undertaking an analysis of Margate that was focused on identifying its key character elements as a way of promoting its unique identity and revitalising the urban heart of Margate Village.

Solution

SLR identified a disconnect between Margate’s commercial village and its coastal strip that was once at the heart of a vibrant community. The village centre is focused on Oxley Avenue, which runs parallel to the coastline and has very little relationship to it.

The team adopted the underlying theme of reinvigorating and transposing some of Margate’s historical ‘memories’ and coastal themes into the Village concepts. This ensured that unique identity of Margate was preserved in public realm areas and ideas.

This complimented the proposed redevelopment of the village centre and the activation of Baynes Street focused on creating pedestrian spaces, footpath activation and links to foreshore.

SLR undertook a lead role as Landscape Architects and Urban Designer and oversaw a consultant team consisting of Branding Specialist’s, Public Art specialist, lighting, traffic and stormwater engineers to advise on the design concepts. SLR worked closely with Council’s urban designers, landscape architects and planners to offer workable and sustainable solutions for the community.
