Masterplan for Barrow Town Centre

Client Name
Barrow Council
Location
Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK

Challenge

SLR's Place team have been working with Barrow Council to explore the development potential of a series of key sites within the town centre. Once a thriving steel and shipbuilding centre Barrow retains a strong economic underpinning through the presence of BAE systems and a range of specialist employers. That strength unfortunately is no longer represented within the town centre which has suffered significant decline over the last few decades.

Solution

The town’s unique setting and good quality building stock offer potential to create an enhanced physical environment and re-energise the centre. A key move is to connect the retail core to the waterfront and open up views to key landmarks such as the magnificent town hall. The masterplan seeks to take advantage of relatively high demand for uses such as offices and hotels, alongside new residential, to animate a chain of public spaces and support the retail and leisure offer.
