MORE - Multi-modal optimisation of urban road space in Europe

Challenge

MORE, an 18-partner consortium led by University College London, is developing tools to assist cities in road space design.

With corridor roads under pressure, delays and variable travel times are adversely affecting road passengers and freight deliveries. MORE will establish improvements in five nodes of the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T): Budapest, Constanta, Lisbon, London and Malmö.

Solution

Taking advantage of advances in big data and using dynamic traffic signing and lane marking capabilities, new web-based tools will be developed for design, evaluated through microsimulation and real-life testing. This will include dynamic lane use to cater for rush hour, traffic calming and public transport, dynamic parking and loading, and the redesign of selected streets including the A2 corridor in London.

Vectos is involved in many of the research areas and responsible for coordinating pilots in the four cities where urban corridors will be redesigned and evaluated. We will coordinate focus groups for stakeholders and residents to co-design streets that best meet their needs.

We will also contribute to the subsequent road management manuals for optimal road space allocation and draft fact sheets which summarise how planners can apply the tools for more efficient street design.

Impact

Overall, this project will help city authorities make the best use of available road-space and apply multimodal design.
