Challenge
SLR were appointed in 2013 to undertake the design of a signalised junction to provide access. The site, derelict since 1986, sits in the Port of Hayle, part of the Cornwall and West Devon Tin and Copper Mining UNESCO World Heritage Site. It now houses a 4,600 sqm ASDA foodstore, retail and restaurant units, performance space and 30 homes.
The development also re-opened the former harbour frontage and part of the original dock structure, and reinstated the sluicing mechanism which kept the estuary channel clear over more than a century, ensuring a sustainable future for the harbour.
Solution
Access into the site required the construction of a new four arm signalised junction with toucan crossings necessitating the realignment of the existing road. The adjacent town square, connected through a railway viaduct, was also upgraded to increase vehicular capacity to facilitate the development and improve pedestrian links from the town centre to the harbour frontage.
We designed the entire scheme, including highway retaining walls, a footway/cycleway abutting a Scheduled Ancient Monument that needed English Heritage approval, and the rerouting of a National Cycle Route working with Sustrans.
Impact
SLR has transformed South Quay in Hayle Town Centre into a quality mixed-use development. The highway designs were approved by Cornwall Council in early 2014 with construction commencing shortly after. The store opened in late 2014.
