24 July 2023 | Client: South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL)
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) currently holds authorisation for the upgrading of Section 4 of the N1 between Monument River and Doornfontein in the Matjiesfontein area. SANRAL applied for the development of eight borrow pits and a hard rock quarry in the area to source road building material for the upgrading of Section 4 of the N1. SLR was appointed to undertake the required Basic Assessment process with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) as the competent authority.
Status
A final Basic Assessment Report was submitted to DMRE for decision-making in February 2022. DMRE issued Environmental Authorisation (EA) for the quarry and five of the eight borrow pits applied for on 10 July 2023 and notified SANRAL of the decision on 21 July 2023.
The EA is available for download below. Should stakeholders wish to appeal against the decision, an appeal must be submitted within 20 days of being sent notification of the decision (i.e. by 14 August 2023).
