Job Description

SLR’s busy European Geotechnical team has enjoyed continued commercial success working across a range of commercial sectors. Consequently, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an engineer at Project grade (SLR’s grades run from Project – Senior – Associate – Principal – Technical Director) to join our established Geotechnical team in Bristol.

Our Geotechnical team provides specialist support for a wide range of SLR projects including, earthworks, mining, renewable energy, infrastructure, water treatment facilities and many other civil engineering related projects. In delivering this support, the Geotechnical team uses state of the art software packages to, stability analyses, foundation assessment, retaining solution analysis, evaluate saturated and unsaturated flow regimes and perform deformation analyses. This position will provide the successful candidate with a wide range of experience and is ideal for someone who is keen to further develop their skills and knowledge in geotechnical engineering to become a professional, chartered engineer or geologist (Ceng or CGeol).

The ideal candidate will be a graduate with some professional experience either in a consultancy or contracting environment. Familiarity with site investigation techniques and the ability to confidently supervise site investigation contractors will be a distinct advantage.

The succesful applicant will provide office and field based support to staff in the Bristol office and throughout the UK, working on a diverse range of projects. The type of work will help develop the successful candidate towards chartered status and is envisaged to include the following:

• Proposal writing
• Site investigation fieldwork – planning, procurement, supervision
• Installation of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring of readings
• Geotechnical analysis / numerical modelling
• Factual reporting
• Interpretive reporting
• Production of tender documents and bills of quantities
• Construction supervision

This role may also support other engineering and related disciplines within the Bristol and other SLR offices, such as Civil Engineering, Land Quality and Geology.

Whilst some projects will be based in the local area, the role may also involve supervision of projects in other locations throughout the UK and occasionally overseas for periods of up to 3 months at a time.


Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
• Minimum degree (BEng/BSc/Meng) in Geology / Geotechnical / Civil / Mining Engineering or related discipline, or relevant MSc
• Good understanding of the principles of Geotechnical Engineering
• Relevant work experience in a Geotechnical engineering / site investigation environment is desirable
• Familiarity with site investigation techniques including soil and rock drilling, trial pitting sampling and in-situ testing
• Ability to record soil and rock descriptions in accordance with BS5930
• Full driving license
