Shirley Ryan AbilityLab

Chicago, Illinois

Built Environment

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago is a new 28-storey, 1.2 million-square-foot hospital dedicated to clinical and research programs. The hospital will focus on innovative techniques in research and clinical treatment to provide expertise and market leadership in brain, spinal cord, neuro-musculoskeletal, pediatric and cancer research and recovery. The facility will house sensitive patients and include outdoor terrace space. The $550 million research hospital was completed in fall 2016.

Working closely with our clients, SLR Consulting conducted studies to address potential air quality impacts and effects from the proposed emergency generators, cooling towers, and emergency smoke exhaust fans. Our work included design reviews and detailed assessment of re-entrainment of Exhaust Sources associated with the new building using both numerical exhaust dispersion prediction methods and wind tunnel tracer gas testing.
